Sigur Rós gave some filmakers the exact same budget to make videos for their new album "Valtari". What they should do? "Whatever comes into their head" when they listen to the songs from the album. The great idea was (and many of you, readers and fellow filmmakers will agree) to grant fully creative freedom removing the usual "artistic approval".
How many of us haven't just dreamed about that? The "client" comes with his project (in this case, a video for their music). You are not going to tell them how to write music, am I right? THEY ARE SIGUR RÓS! Well... they are not telling the directors how to do their work either. Absolute Creative Freedom.
This Valtari mystery film experiment doesn't stop there. They invited any other filmmaker around the world to make an "official video" that will be voted and selected among all the entries to be part of the series of videos that will be published on the official Sigur Rós webpage. And will receive a modest price of $5000.
"We
never meant our music to come with a pre-programmed emotional response. We
don’t want to tell anyone how to feel and what to take from it. With the films,
we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. None
of them know what the others are doing, so hopefully it could be
interesting."
A "mystery" film experiment indeed. You never know what the result will be.
