Pulp Fiction! (Miserlou)

Just found this great video uploaded two days ago, and is hitting today (almost) the 100,000 views. This group is called "Trilogy", and are some great violin trio indeed.

Wikipedia: "Misirlou", from the Greek: Μισιρλού 'Egyptian girl', is a folk song dating back to 1927, originally as a Greek rebetiko composition influenced by Middle Eastern music. The song then gained popularity among Middle Eastern audiences through Arabic (belly dancing), Jewish (klezmer) and Turkish versions.

The song eventually gained worldwide popularity through Dick Dale's 1962 American surf rock version, which was responsible for popularizing the song in Western popular culture. Various versions have since been recorded, including other surf and rock versions by bands such as The Beach Boys and The Ventures as well as international orchestral easy listening (exotica) versions by musicians such as Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman. Dick Dale's surf rock version later gained renewed popularity through its use in the 1994 Quentin Tarantino film Pulp Fiction and again through its sampling in The Black Eyed Peas song "Pump It" (2006).

Enjoy.

The valtari mystery film experiment

Sigur Rós gave some filmakers the exact same budget to make videos for their new album "Valtari". What they should do? "Whatever comes into their head" when they listen to the songs from the album. The great idea was (and many of you, readers and fellow filmmakers will agree) to grant fully creative freedom removing the usual "artistic approval".

How many of us haven't just dreamed about that? The "client" comes with his project (in this case, a video for their music). You are not going to tell them how to write music, am I right? THEY ARE SIGUR RÓS! Well... they are not telling the directors how to do their work either. Absolute Creative Freedom.

This Valtari mystery film experiment doesn't stop there. They invited any other filmmaker around the world to  make an "official video" that will be voted and selected among all the entries to be part of the series of videos that will be published on the official Sigur Rós webpage. And will receive a modest price of $5000.

"We never meant our music to come with a pre-programmed emotional response. We don’t want to tell anyone how to feel and what to take from it. With the films, we have literally no idea what the directors are going to come back with. None of them know what the others are doing, so hopefully it could be interesting."

A "mystery" film experiment indeed. You never know what the result will be.

Here is the official page of the videos:

Sigur Rós - Fjögur píanó

"i really can’t remember why we started this record, i no longer know what
we were trying to do back then. i do know session after session went pear-
shaped, we lost focus and almost gave up...did give up for a while. but then
something happened and form started to emerge, and now i can honestly say
that it’s the only sigur rós record i have listened to for pleasure in my own
house after we’ve finished it." - georg

The Marmalade: The beauty of high speed

The Marmalade Creative Effects is a special effects studio in Germany. What captured my attention on this particular video, in addition to the beautiful images, was the use of a "High Speed Motion Control System" they called 'Spike'. You may want to pay special attention to the minute 02:54 of the video. The precision that uses Spike to follow the falling cup of wine to the floor. That opens a new panorama about making special "high speed" shooting. I see that they are using a "Phantom" camera (a really small one) on the 'Spike'. The "Phantom HD Gold". But what makes the SPIKE an amazing tool for filmmakers is the robotic arm that controls the High Speed Movement of the camera.

Surely we will be seeing more amazing images on commercial and cinema.
